I can not establish particularly in the event the “Oval P” was first used according to my work but I might make this observation. The Oval P proof stamp is barely observed on barrels that have a Style 3 barrel tackle which is located around the remaining facet of your barrel. Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference e-book around the Design 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started proof marking them in 1908… I do not know if that is certainly accurate, but will suppose that it is. The “WP” evidence mark was used following the barrel and receiver had been mated, assembled and completed. This is very evident over the firearms made from the late teenagers as a result of early 30s if the blue flaked (popped) off once the evidence was struck to the receiver frame.
